Shared Bedroom -Transitioning a Nursery

Toddler Bedroom Plaid Wall

Never thought I’d actually be having to think about transitioning a nursery into a shared bedroom at my age, however as I’ve had these two surprises in my late 30s, here we are!

When we bought this 4 bedroom house we had a spare guest room. That spare room was quickly turned into a nursery for #3 and then #4, but recently when I spotted my two year old climbing out of the crib, I decided it was time she needed to transition to a toddler bed. My 4 year old, who had been booted out of the nursery, was sleeping with one of her older sisters. Time for her to move back!

Before

Here’s a pic of the nursery and that intricate accent wall my husband did.

I contemplated keeping the crib and just adding the toddler rail, however this crib was borrowed from a friend of mine and a 2 year borrow turned into 4! I think it’s time to give it back.

Mood Board

I first worked on creating a mood/design board for their room. I wanted to try to do this room on a budget, so using existing items was a must. The color scheme was kept as is, and there was no way I was painting over that accent wall.

After

And with out further ado, here’s their completed room!

Toddler Beds

This room happens to be the smallest room in our house, and because my 2 year old and 4 year old still play with a lot of toys and run around, to maximize space in the room, I thought it was best to purchase two toddler size beds. We also kept the existing mattress and only had to purchase one.

My 4 year old is still pretty small so this Delta Children Bennett Toddler Bed are so cute and the prefect size!

Bedding and Pillows

The bedding is a mix and match. The quilt I purchased on sale from Pottery Barn, to coordinate with the existing colors of the room. My girls are both into Frozen (shocker I know) but I didn’t want to commit to any princess bedding. I compromised by framing a pic of my 4 year old dressed up as a princess instead, and she’s happy with it.

I added a thicker white duvet under the quilt , a no brainer for a Canadian and I think it’ll help with adding some weight on them. (Keep them down and in bed longer, wishful thinking).

Keep.Things.Simple. My girls, well really my 2 year old fights quite a bit with our 4 year old. Pretty much because she wants everything to be EXACTLY like her older sister’s. To avoid any unnecessary fights, I decided to keep the bedding exactly the same, however let them choose a new stuffie for the beds, to add their own personal touch.

To further define their individual spaces a bit, I purchased the white frames from Indigo (similar) and printed a cute pic of them to hang above their beds. The accent pillows were finds from Indigo and Homesense and it just added much needed cozy layers. Pillows always for the win I say. Shared bedrooms can be tricky to keep coherent, small changes to allow individuality is the key!

Similar assorted pillows you can layer, Pom Pom Pillow Cover, Happy Pillow Cover.

Storage

We already had the Ikea Hemnes dresser that is very popular for nurseries (and for good reason). We are in the middle of potty training so we still need the change pad with the drawers for accessories.

I did however invest in some gold hardware, the rectangular knobs are from Home Depot and the pretty bow tie ones are from Anthropologie. I used the same handles to update the side table for the girls.

I also kept the bookcase from the original nursery, that I painted using stencil and leftover paint from the wall. The bench is great for some extra seating when all 4 girls are together and for a few of their toys. I say a few because I’m encouraging them to play in the family room and not ransack this room. Contain the toddler mess!

Details & Decor

Now for the final bit of details of this shared bedroom. First this light fixture, from Pottery Barn! I obsessed for days whether or not to spend the money on it, and I’m so glad I did.

The mobile was another diy when it was a nursery and I’m not willing to part with it just yet. The shelf was a lucky find from Homesense, cute little spot to display some of their accessories.

The one other empty wall, I hung up some frames with their pics, and the art was painted by sis-in-law, I framed it using the same white frames from Indigo.

Hope you enjoyed this little girls bedroom tour, and found some helpful tips. I’ll leave you with some more pics!

Hope you enjoyed this fun nursery turned shared bedroom for my girls!
