Audio Video Equipment Organization
Whether you are in the middle of a home gym reno, or converting an existing space, having the right audio video equipment is key to a great workout.
Planning
Putting some thought into what your media needs are will keep you from disappointment after your home gym is set up. Consider the following.
Equipment
- Television
- Surround sound speakers and receiver
- Wifi
- Bluetooth/Headsets
Wiring
Unfinished Spaces
If your space is unfinished, or in the process of being finished, then it would be best to plan for wiring now. Furthermore, make sure you have proficient amount of wall outlets.
Anticipate what wiring you will need, for example:
- Ethernet cable – for internet
- Audio cable – for surround sound
- HDMI cable – for video
Plan where the wiring would be accessible, and for which components.
Finished Spaces
For spaces that are already finished, there are options available to hide cables using:
- Wall cable covers
- Fish wires through walls (might require you to hire someone who is capable to set this up)
You might also want to consider going through the wireless option wherever possible (i.e. Bluetooth speakers, Wi-Fi single boosters, etc.)
Setting up Audio Video Equipment
Television
A television that’s a Smart TV is ideal so you have the ability to stream workouts via YouTube, or watch Netflix.
If you have a regular tv, you can cast using a media streaming device, such as Roku, Firestick etc.
Position your tv so its visible from all workout zones and is at a comfortable height. We mounted ours on the wall using a tv mount, so that it can be swiveled, pulled out or angled.

Sound System
Speakers should be out of the way when looking to organize your home gym. You don’t want to be tripping over wires during a workout. Mount whenever possible, or even utilize shelves (see below).
We used this Floating Wall Mounted AV Shelf to mount our receiver for the sound system. Our surround sound is very old, discontinued, but something like the JBL Surround System would work great in gyms.
We placed the subwoofer underneath the receiver shelf, and tall speakers in the corners of the gym. Smaller speakers should be mounted where ever possible, and we mounted ours in the top corners of the room.
Deciding the placement of the speakers will be important so that wiring will be available in the right location. Key take away here is to keep the speakers from taking up important floor space.
Wifi Capabilities
Depending on where you set up your home gym, you might need to take into consideration the Wifi signal. Main floor gyms should have no issues, however for basements you usually need to boost the signal. That can be done via a hardline internet connection and not use Wifi or, in our case we used a combination:
- Powerline Ethernet Adapter – Turns any electrical outlet into a wireless internet connection
- WiFi Router – Extends the Wifi bandwidth and coverage
By using the powerline and router we did not have to break walls to set up ethernet cables.
With the right organizing pieces, great music and entertainment you’re bound to have a better workout, and a gym you can’t wait to get to!
That brings us to the end of this 3 part series. A safer more aesthetically pleasing home gym starts with a good plan. Make sure to check out all of my Home Gym posts so you’re on the right track . Leave me any questions!
