A Little Background

Hi all, I will start with some background before I get into the review. I work out regularly, and weight lifting is the main part of my workout routine. I used to go to a gym where I had all the weights in the world to work with. However, the past few years due to work and family schedules, I switched to working out at home. My wife and I found it easier to juggle our 4 kids and squeeze a workout in right at home, and thus during our basement reno we built a dedicated home gym.

As some fitness centers are closed due to Covid-19, you might also be working out from home. From experience I can say it can be challenging due to limited weights, space and budget. I found some key equipment that has helped with some of those restraints.

Why the BowFlex SelectTech 552?

Since lifting weights is my primary source of fitness, having dumbbells in my home gym is a must. Buying one or two dumbbells won’t usually hit the wallet, however, if you need more or heavier weights, then the cost and storage can be an issue.

The perfect solution to this dilemma are adjustable dumbbells. They are cost-effective and compact enough where storage would not be a cause of concern.

I was eyeing the BowFlex SelectTech 552 for quite some time. The moment they went on sale during Black Friday, I didn’t hesitate and bought them. After using them 3 times a week for the past year, it’s a purchase that I have not regretted.

BowFlex SelectTech 552 – Some Info

The BowFlex SelectTech 552 are adjustable dumbbells, meaning the weights can be adjusted:

  • 2.5lbs increments from 5lbs to the 25lbs
  • 5lbs increments from 25lbs to 50lbs
  • 2.5lbs from 50lbs to 52.5lbs

These weights can replace 15 individual dumbbells, so instant save on money and space.

First Impressions & Putting Them to Work

Overall, the SelectTech are easy to use. Changing the weights is done flawlessly, and the amount of weight is just enough for my workouts.

The BowFlex SelectTech 552 is well built, with the weights and base made from high-quality plastic. They are durable and can go through a beating. The grips are made of metal and covered by a rubber which makes them comfortable to lift.

Changing the weights is just as easy as turning the dials on the side. The design is simple and intuitive. The dials turn easy without any sticking. You can only adjust the weight if the dumbbells are sitting in its base. A safety feature to note, the weights need to sit on their base properly or you won’t be able to adjust or lift the weights.

Something to Consider

Howeve,r the one thing to note is that the dumbbells’ are wider than I expected. At a width of 16.5″, the weights can be awkward to work with, especially, if you’re not used to lifting bigger heavier weights. No matter what weight the dumbbells are set at, the size of the dumbbell does not change. So, if it’s either 5lbs or 52.5 lbs the width of the dumbbell stays the same. It does take some getting used to, but it is something you can overcome.

Also, for those you use who drop weights when completing a set, DON’T, these adjustable dumbbells may break. Some care is needed when placing the weights back in its base or floor. Again, it will be an adjustment in behavior, but shouldn’t be a show stopper.

The one thing that I’m looking to get is the BowFlex SelectTech dumbell stand. The stand makes it easier on your back to pick up or return them back to its base, hence solving any issues regarding dropping the weights. Its the perfect complement to the BowFlex SelectTech 552 dumbells.

The Verdict

Overall, these weights are great and my most used home gym equipment. As mentioned, adjusting the weights is easy, which makes for a smooth workout. They are excellent for small spaces as well, and reduces clutter in your gym. However, for the very heavy lifters, these weights may not be for you, as they might not be heavy enough, but for most these dumbbells are more than enough.

If you are looking for adjustable dumbbells, and have bee on the fence because of price etc., the BowFlex SelectTech 552 is a smart buy and a welcome addition to any home gym.

Thank you Asif for that detailed review!
